Old Man O' The Woods

I am a backwoodsman and an experienced teacher and lecturer. My specialist subjects are Outdoor Education & Leadership, Environmental Geography and Nature Connectivity. In addition to teaching, I worked for several years in youth development and employment training.

Outside of the UK, I have: travelled in the Peruvian Amazon looking for Giant Otters and trekked in the Japanese Alps looking for the elusive Giant Salamander; led gap year expeditions in the rain forests of Borneo, Malaysia and Ghana, mountain treks and bush safari in southern Tanzania.

I was made a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society in 2014 and a RGS academic scholar in 2019. I am a strong advocate in the value of outdoor and adventurous activities, and time spent outside in nature for personal development and physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

My favourite occupation is the wilderness and backwoodsman skills of the Canadian, Australian and African explorers, frontiersman and settlers, and the survival and crafting skills of the First Nation peoples of Canada and the Native Americans.
